Flexible sigmoidoscopy is a diagnostic procedure used to examine the lower part of the colon (sigmoid colon and rectum). At Southwest Gastroenterology, this procedure is often recommended as a less invasive screening tool for colorectal cancer or to investigate symptoms like rectal bleeding, changes in bowel habits, or chronic diarrhea.
The procedure involves inserting a flexible, lighted tube through the rectum to view the lining of the sigmoid colon. While it does not provide a full view of the entire colon like a colonoscopy, it can still detect polyps, tumors, and signs of inflammation or infection.
Patients typically undergo minimal preparation, such as an enema, and the procedure is usually done without sedation, allowing for a quicker recovery. Despite its limited range, flexible sigmoidoscopy remains a valuable tool in colorectal cancer prevention and diagnosis.
Our providers may recommend flexible sigmoidoscopy as part of a broader screening strategy, particularly when combined with fecal occult blood testing. It can also be used to monitor certain chronic conditions such as ulcerative colitis.
Southwest Gastroenterology is proud to offer this efficient and effective screening method as part of our comprehensive gastrointestinal care.
