Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD)

Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD) is a highly specialized technique used for the removal of larger or more deeply infiltrated polyps and early-stage cancers in the GI tract. Unlike EMR, which removes lesions in pieces, ESD allows for en bloc (whole) resection of the lesion, providing more accurate pathological assessment and reducing the risk of recurrence.

This advanced procedure involves the injection of a fluid beneath the lesion to lift it from the deeper muscle layers of the GI tract. The gastroenterologist then carefully dissects the lesion away from the submucosal layer using precise endoscopic tools. ESD is particularly valuable for treating early cancers of the esophagus, stomach, and rectum.

Because of its complexity, ESD is typically reserved for cases that require a more comprehensive approach than EMR. Our team at Southwest Gastroenterology is trained in the latest ESD techniques, ensuring safe and effective treatment for patients with complex lesions.

Recovery from ESD may take slightly longer than EMR, but the benefits include a lower recurrence rate and often no need for surgical follow-up. Patients are usually monitored with periodic endoscopies after treatment.

Our practice is proud to be one of the few centers in the region offering ESD. We strive to provide the highest level of care with a focus on innovation and patient safety.
